I love absolutely love a good homemade Christmas gift – which led me to making this DIY Medal Display. My husband is incredible, he’s an avid pickleball player and marathon runner. He has tons medals that have been sitting in a bag in our closet. It was time to get them out and on display!
This DIY Medal Display is super quick and easy to make. It’s the perfect project for a beginner or to use up some scrap wood.
Let’s get into it!
Supplies Needed for This DIY Medal Display
- 1 x 4 board
- 5/8″ dowel
- Sandpaper
- Paint and stain (optional)

Steps to Make a DIY Medal Display
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
I bought my dowel from Walmart, but you could get one from any hardware store! And for the 1 x 4 board, I just used scrap wood. But you could obviously get this from the hardware store too.

Step 2: Make Your Cuts
You can customize your medal holder depending on what size you’d like, but here are the measurements for my dimensions –
Cut dowel in to two 18″ pieces (if you buy from walmart, this is cutting it in half).
Cut two 3.5″ squares from your 1 x 4 board (although it’s a 1 by “4” it’s actually 3.5″).

Step 3: Assemble Pieces
Pre-drill a small hole in the center of the ends of your dowel.
Pre-drill two holes on each square – measuring in 1 inch from each side (see picture below). Pre-drilling helps to prevent your wood from splitting, so don’t skip this step!
Using your drill and a 1 1/4″ screw, attach your square to your dowel.

Step 4: Sand and Paint (if desired)
You could sand and paint before after assembling!
For this project, I liked the raw wood look. But I think staining or painting it could also look really good!
I just did a quick sanding with 120 grit sandpaper to give it a nice smooth feel (for some awesome tips to sanding and a better understanding of sandpaper grit, make sure you visit this post).
Step 4: Hang Up, Add Your Medals and Admire
There are several ways you can hang up your DIY Medal holder.
I ended up doing a combination of two things (because I really didn’t want it to fall).
I used an L bracket and heavy duty command strips along the back.

And of course, I had to add some of my husbands favorite athletes to finish out the wall.
This was such a fun, quick project. And it made for the perfect Christmas present.
